How it all started

So you want to know about The Wine Dealer and how it all began. It started with a takeaway, yes! A takeaway. Back in 2008 I had just moved my IT business into a limited company: 'Edworthy Computing Limited'. To celebrate I just wanted to chill with my wife Claire and a Chinese takeaway. Having gone to to pick it up, I wanted to grab any bottle I wasn't too concerned with the variety, let alone the colour.

I didn't understand the different grapes, regions or even the impact the colour of wine has on the food. How a specific wine can affect the food flavour when it reaches your tongue. That has been enlightened just by the flavour of the wine.

Struggling to Park

There were no spaces outside of the local convenience store. As I was in a bit of a rush, I drove down through the street again and there was enough space to park a lorry outside of the Wine merchants. Which fortunately was close to the Takeaway. So, I pulled up and thought business is good, it’s a special occasion, sod it! I will buy a bottle with a bit more intention. Although I had no idea the impact this bottle of wine would have on the rest of my life.

I entered the shop and greeted the owner, and he asked: "How could I help?" I said "well actually, I was just looking for a bottle of wine to have with our Chinese."

"Ah!" he said "You want a bottle of Gewürz","A bottle of Ge what?" I replied in a confused tone.

"A bottle of Gewürz, Gewürztraminer' the aromatic tones will really bring out the flavour in the Chinese Sauces" he said.

For you that don't know Gewürztraminer is an aromatic white wine made from white grapes, the wine originated from Tramin in Italy. Anyway, I digress.

The Wine

I purchased the wine which cost me £9.00, collected the Chinese and got home. I opened up the wine and poured a glass. My wife and I dished out the chicken chow mein, rice and spring rolls and I took a swig of the wine without even smelling or observing what was in the glass. "e'yuuk!" I said, "that is terrible".

I then took another mouthful and took another sip of the wine just to make sure my taste buds weren't deceiving me. And WOW! I can still remember the most extraordinary taste that I had experienced running through my tongue. It was like an orchestra rising to their grand finale. That was the moment I was hooked on the experience you can have from one sip and how the addition of certain foods and flavours can affect it.
